Publication of ISO 8939:2025 “Decommissioning of medical cyclotron”

The international standard ISO 8939:2025 “Decommissioning of medical cyclotron” was published in October 2025. This standard provides international guidance on activation assessment, decontamination, and dismantling procedures for decommissioning medical cyclotron facilities. KEK made a major contribution to the drafting of this standard.
The work was carried out by ISO/TC85/SC5/WG13, with Professor Hiroshi Matsumura of KEK serving as the representative expert from Japan. The draft was developed through collaboration among specialists in accelerator and radiation fields from KEK and other domestic institutions, integrating Japan’s expertise into the international standardization process. The contents of this standard were informed by the “Manual for Measurement and Determination of Activation for the Decommissioning of Accelerators – the 2024 Edition”, developed mainly by the Radiation Science Center, KEK (English version , Japanese version ).
This new ISO standard is expected to be widely utilized to ensure safe and efficient decommissioning of medical cyclotron facilities worldwide.
