Internship for Technical Staff Was Held

(English translation 2023-01-19)

2022 KEK Research Technical Staff Internship (Work Experience) was held.

The Mechanical Engineering Center held the "Work Experience of Processing Technology Supporting World-Leading Experiments" on September 5 and 6, 2022. A total of six participants, three each, experienced hermetic welding of a vacuum flange, one of the accelerator components.

First, the students practice welding. It was difficult to get it right the first time, but with one-on-one instruction and repeated practice, they were able to weld well.

The vacuum flange is now complete.

After this, the airtightness test was conducted by actually removing air with a vacuum pump. The vacuum components of all six participants passed this test.

At the Computing Research Center, three trainees participated in building a web server on a Linux OS using VirtualBox on September 5 under the title of "Information Processing Experience to Support KEK's Experiments.” Participants installed Linux OS and configured necessary network settings in a virtual machine on a Windows PC, built a web server using Apache, and experienced creating web pages using a CMS (Contents Management System).

On September 7, the Radiation Science Center held the "Radiation Measurement Experience to Support KEK's Experiments --- Experiments on Radiation Monitors Used in the Centralized Radiation Monitoring System ---" and four participants joined the event. They practiced inspection and calibration of radiation monitors, installed these monitors, and then checked the data.

As an online work experience course, "Identification and Quantification of Radionuclides Produced by Accelerators --- Measurement of Radioactivity Produced by Accelerator Operation ---" was held on August 31. Four students participated in this course.

The Cryogenics Science Center held an online work experience course, "Technology behind Superconductivity --- Turning Helium into Liquid ---" on August 31, and two participants joined the course. The course included an explanation of the helium liquefaction mechanism using images and flow diagrams, a live video tour of the facility, and hands-on practice in reading and drawing flow diagrams necessary for designing and managing high-pressure gas facilities.

KEK conducts internship programs every September and February. Applications for the next round are expected to open around December. For details, please visit the KEK Technical Division website.

* Applications for the internship program to be held in February 2023 are now being accepted (added on 2022.12.15).
