(English translation 2024-05-16)

The 24th Workshop on Environmental Radioactivity was held from March 6th to 8th, 2023, hosted by the Radiation Science Center and the Alpha Emitter and Environmental Radioactivity Subcommittee of the Japan Society of Nuclear and Radiochemical Sciences.
This was the first time in four years that the workshop was held on-site, in a format that presentations and Q&A sessions were held in Kobayashi Hall, and was also made available for viewing remotely. There were 161 participants (96 on-site, 65 online), including domestic universities, research institutes, local government laboratories, private companies, and the general public.
Two invited lectures and 50 general oral presentations were held on topics such as natural environmental radioactivity, radiation and nuclear facility environmental radioactivity, and the Tokyo Electric Power Company's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, Information exchange and lively discussions regarding the latest research results took place.
At the end of the meeting, the following four excellent presentations by undergraduate students, graduate students, and young researchers/engineers were awarded the Research Society  Encouragement Award.

  • Mayu Tsuchiya (Graduate School of Science, Tohoku University)
"Detecting earthquake precursor phenomena in atmospheric radon concentration fluctuations using Random Forest analysis"
  • Yuma Ogawa  (Water Environment Field Station, GLEC, Ibaraki University)
"Radiocesium concentrations of invertebrates inhabiting streams and  forest environments in the difficult-to-return area in Fukushima Prefecture"
  • Ryohei Tomita  (Japan Atomic Energy Agency)
"Creation of simulated uranium particles using porous silica as a base material and isotope ratio measurement using LG-SIMS method"
  • Miki Nakada (National Institute for Fusion Science)
"Monitoring report of 7Be and 210Pb in atmospheric airosols and depositions on the site of a large fusion test facility"
