Professors of Radiation Science Center, Go Yoshida et al. received the 55th Atomic Energy Society of Japan Best Paper Award.

Professors of Radiation Science Center, Go Yoshida, Hiroshi Matsumura, and Kazuyoshi Masumoto, who authored the paper "Investigation into activation of accelerators at various synchrotron radiation facilities in Japan" published in the Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology, Vol. 59, pp. 543-554, received the 55th Atomic Energy Society of Japan Best Paper Award.

The authors conducted large-scale activation survey campaign in five representative synchrotron light source facilities (SPring-8, PF, UVSOR, HiSOR and SR Center) as target. In Japan, the guideline for the decommissioning of high-energy accelerator facilities including synchrotron light source facility has not been prepared yet. To establish the guideline, they investigated the amount of radionuclide production using various γ-ray detectors and environmental neutron dosimeters targeting for metals (beam-pipes, magnets, etc.) that constitute the beamline and concrete that constitutes the building. It was found there is no risk of activation in the case of concrete in all the facilities. Also, almost all metals were not activated except for quite few of activated parts were confirmed.

These studies by the awardees were conducted as part of a research project under the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) Japan for the implementation of a clearance system for accelerator facilities.
