The Institute of Materials Structure Science (IMSS) restructured its organization to strengthen both research and facility functions on April 1st, 2019. The successful candidates will belong to the end station engineering section of the Photon Factory (PF, SR facility). The beamlines at the PF are currently classified into 10 method groups, and the candidates will be in charge of one of the groups that are utilized mainly in the soft X-ray and/or vacuum ultraviolet regions (Photoemission spectroscopy: BL-2A/B, 3B, 11D, 13A/B, 28A/B; Soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy: BL-7A, 11A/B, 16A, 20A, 27A). Applicants can apply for the position of Associate Professor or Assistant Professor. The hiring criteria for each position will be taken into consideration in the selection.
The end station engineering section promotes the sophistication of beamline end-stations including experimental devices and the development of measurement techniques, aiming to create new application research utilizing the features of synchrotron radiation. The candidates will promote these activities in collaboration with Synchrotron Radiation Science Divisions 1 and 2 and the sections in the PF, regardless of their current specialized fields. Although the main responsibility is to work as a beamline scientist in the responsible method group, we are looking for researchers who are willing to contribute to the development of synchrotron radiation science from a broad perspective.
○Associate Professor
Associate Professors will be hired to oversee the management of the beamlines in the responsible method group. The successful candidate will be expected not only to contribute to the development, sophistication, and joint usage of the beamlines, but also to promote the research utilizing synchrotron radiation and related methods, while keeping an eye on the domestic and international situation.
○Assistant Professor
A researcher who aspires to become a beamline scientist will be hired as an assistant professor in a tenure-track-like arrangement. The successful candidate will promote the scientific activities at the beamlines on a methodological basis, in addition to the duties as a beamline scientist. They are expected to master not only the techniques specialized for individual methodological field, but also the techniques common to all synchrotron radiation facilities including the Photon Factory, and to become the future leaders of synchrotron radiation science.
