IMSS has 4 science divisions, 2 experimental facilities, and 2 research centers to carry out research and development by using 4 quantum beams: synchrotron radiation, slow positron, neutron, and muon beams.
The successful candidates belong to one of the following (1) to (6) science divisions and experimental facilities in the IMSS. They are expected to carry out research and development in materials and life sciences. The workplace for (3) and (4) is KEK Tokai campus and the other workplace is KEK Tsukuba campus.
Synchrotron Radiation Science Division I has Surface Science Section and Solid State Physics Section, and Synchrotron Radiation Science Division II has Materials Science Section and Structural Biology Section. These Divisions are using Photon Factory (PF). Surface Science, Solid State Physics and Materials Science Sections are doing multi-probe researches using 4 quantum beams in close collaboration with the Center for Integrative Quantum Beam Science (CIQuS). On the other hand, Structural Biology Section is using not only synchrotron-based X-rays but also cryogenic electron microscopy, crystallization facility, and so on, in close collaboration with the Structural Biology Research Center (SBRC). Photon Factory has Administration Section, Beam Line Engineering Section, and End-station Engineering Section. Neutron and Muon Science Divisions are based on J-PARC MLF (Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility) on the Tokai Campus.
